Passive Smoking

- A great percentage of families have no limits for children’s exposure to tobacco smoke. A study involving 1.770 parents and guardians in New York and New Jersey finds that in almost 50% of homes and more than 50% of family cars, children are exposed to passive smoke. The research also affirms that many children are not protected by their parents from passive smoke in public places.

- Researchers of the University of Missouri, Sara Pyle, C. Keith Haddock, and colleagues interviewed parents and guardians at 15 pediatric departments in New York and New Jersey. They asked the parents to identify from a list what smoking restrictions were important for the family.

- In 40 percent of homes and in more than 50 percent of family cars, children are exposed to tobacco smoke. Less than 50% of the parents/guardians choose to sit in the no-smoking section of restaurants and trains, and less than 50% ask others not to smoke in the presence of their children. Families with low salaries and ethnic minorities were among the ones with no limits for children’s exposure to passive smoking outside their homes.

- Tobacco smoke influences the incidence of bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma. The results show the necessity of more actions to stop smoking in public and other closed places to protect children from the effects of passive smoking.
